Frequently asked questions
Questions people often ask about reTONE.
Do I need root or any modifications?
No. You install it like any other app. For the steps, see "Install" in the Guide.
Can I install it on the phone I use every day?
Yes. If you choose "Music app" the first time you open it, your home screen and your notification and ringtone volumes are left unchanged.
My notification sounds and ringtones have stopped
Silent DAP mode is on. Turn it off under "Sound" in reTONE's settings, and the original volumes come back. If you have already uninstalled reTONE, turn the volumes back up under "Sound" in Android's settings.
Do I need Wi-Fi or mobile data?
Not for playback. By default reTONE doesn't connect at all and collects no information about you. If you turn on Network features in Settings, it connects only when you ask it to or for checks you've chosen. Streaming apps need their own connection.
Is it safe to connect an old phone to Wi-Fi?
reTONE does not require a Wi-Fi connection for playback. Older versions of Android, and phones whose updates have ended, retain known vulnerabilities that will not be fixed. If you connect, we recommend connecting only to trusted Wi-Fi networks and doing your browsing on your everyday phone. Connecting is at your own discretion and risk (see "When you connect to Wi-Fi or another network" in the Guide for details).
Which formats can it play?
In addition to the formats Android on your phone can play, it plays DSD, AIFF, ALAC, and high-resolution FLAC and WAV. The full list is in "Features."
Can I use a USB DAC?
Yes, on phones with USB host support (OTG). The combinations we have confirmed are listed in the Technical notes. Some phones report USB host support but still don't work.
Songs seem to be missing from my library
Your library may be showing only one NAS’s songs. Tapping "Show in Library" on a NAS in Stream shows just that NAS’s songs. Tap ✕ on "Only (name)" below the library tabs, or choose "All" under "Show tracks" in the library menu (⋮), to see everything on this phone and your NAS again. When a NAS can’t be reached, NAS songs that haven’t loaded are hidden, with a notice above the library.
I added music, but it doesn't show up
Open the library menu (⋮) and tap "Refresh library." reTONE doesn't look inside folders whose names start with "." or folders that contain a .nomedia file.
My USB DAC crackles or drops out
This can happen with some phone and DAC combinations. Try the latest version of reTONE, which may help. Wi-Fi can also leak into the USB cable as noise, so try turning Wi-Fi off.
The DAC lights up, but isn’t detected
The phone may not be supplying enough power. A powered OTG adapter or USB hub can help. Phones without USB host support can’t use a USB DAC.
The battery drains fast with a USB DAC
The DAC may be charging from the phone. Turn off USB charging in the DAC’s settings, or use an OTG adapter that takes external power.
DSD tracks cut out briefly on my USB DAC
Some DACs mute for a moment on DSD tracks with large signal swings. Choosing "Convert to PCM" under "Sending DSD" in the settings may help.
